Besides System of a Down, Daron Malakian is member of another band called Scars On Broadway:
History[edit source | editbeta]
Early incarnation (2003)[edit source | editbeta]
In 2003, Daron Malakian (lead guitar and vocals), Greg Kelso (rhythm guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass), Casey Chaos (vocals), and Zach Hill (drums) recorded a demo tape entitled "Ghetto Blaster Rehearsals" credited to the name Scars on Broadway. However, in 2007, an official letter appeared on the band's website that stated that these tracks are not in any way affiliated with Malakian's later project Scars on Broadway. Incidentally, these demo sessions produced "BYOB," which would be a major hit for System of a Down in 2005.
Self-titled debut album (2005–2008)[edit source | editbeta]
In December 2005, Malakian stated in an interview that he "could release ten solo records tomorrow." and that he has"tons of material laying around. After these albums, - (Mezmerize andHypnotize) - I'm gonna go off to learn how to brain and do something on my own, just like Serj. And no, System of a Down is not breaking up. We're just gonna do like KISS and put out our own solo records."
Following System's hiatus, Malakian announced his latest project — Scars on Broadway — a band which would include System of a Down bassist, Shavo Odadjian, and himself. Ultimately, Odadjian was not involved with the band, and instead System drummer, John Dolmayan became a member.
After Malakian and Dolmayan experimented with different musicians, for a period of nine months in 2007 - 2008 the band took form and forged its sound in intense rehearsals and recording sessions under Malakian’s direction, at his home studio and Sunset Sound; with musicians Danny Shamoun on keyboards, Dominic Cifarelli on bass, and Franky Perez on guitar and backing vocals. In keeping secrecy from the press, the additional members adopted the title “the unofficial members”.
The band's website featured a countdown timer, counting down to 15:00 PST of March 28, 2008. Additionally, above the timer, in quotation marks was the phrase "They say it's all about to end." When the countdown ended, the song "They Say", was made available on the site. The song is also available for listening on the band's official MySpace page. It is no longer available as a free download.
Scars on Broadway played their first live show April 11, 2008 at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles, CA. They have also confirmed to be playing with Metallica at KFMA Day 2008 in Tucson, AZ.[4] On January 22, 2008 Scars on Broadway were announced to be performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 26, 2008.[5] On May 17 of that year, the band also performed at the sixteenth annual KROQ Weenie Roast. Additional tour dates were announced on their official website on the 30th of May.[5]
On May 2, 2008, Scars announced on their official website that their debut album, Scars on Broadway, would be released on the 28th and 29 July.
Starting from May 28, 2008, "They Say" is available for purchase at iTunes Music store. On July 20, 2008, "They Say" was featured as iTunes' Free Single of the Week. On June 20 Scars on Broadway released a teaser for their single "They Say" on a MySpace bulletin. In the teaser, the video is said to premiere soon.
"They Say" was also included in the end of 2008 Kerrang! compilation album, amongst other popular and new rock music by various artists.
The video for their first single "They Say" premiered on Yahoo's music page on June 27. The song "Chemicals" was made available to listen to on the band's MySpace page on July 8.
On July 25, it was announced that "They Say" would be a downloadable track for the video game Rock Band on July 29 for Xbox 360 and July 31 for PS3. [1] "They Say" also appears on Guitar Hero 5.
On July 28, 2008, Scars On Broadway was released to critical acclaim, with Kerrang! giving it a rare '5 K' rating.
Also on July 28, Scars on Broadway played a record release show at the Union Station in Los Angeles.
Hiatus and USO tour (2008–2009)[edit source | editbeta]
In late 2008, Malakian announced via the band's website that their headlining tour to promote the album's release, which included an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, would be cancelled with no plans of rescheduling.
Although no official confirmation was released, interviews with both bassist Dominic Cifarelli and drummer John Dolmayan seemed to confirm that the band was finished.[6][7]
However, in May 2009 when asked if the band would ever record or perform again, drummer John Dolmayan stated: "I’m not sure, but I do miss it."[8]
In June 2009, Perez announced via his official myspace that he was in the studio collaborating with Velvet Revolver guitarist Dave Kushner.[9][10] To date they have released three song for free via the Franky Perez official website[11][12][13] under the pseudonym of DKFXP, a combination of the initials of Franky and Kushner.
In August 2009, Dolmayan, Perez, Shamoun, and Cifarelli as Scars on Broadway traveled to Iraq for a USO tour across the U.S. army bases. Their setlist consisted of covers well as a few Scars songs. Perez stated on his Twitter that "the Scars tunes sound amazing but they're not the same without D..." He also stated before they left that Malakian had given them his blessing.[citation needed]
In October, Perez stated on his Twitter account that he and bandmate John Dolmayan were jamming with Weezer bassist Scott Shriner and Velvet Revolver guitarist Dave Kushner, who Perez had been working with before.[14] He also stated that he had been in the studio with Malakian.
On October 31, 2009, Malakian performed with Perez, Dolmayan, and System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian for Odadjian's Holloween party at the Roxy. The group performed a System of a Down song ("Suite-Pee"), a Scars on Broadway song ("They Say") as well as an unknown song. It was the first time that Malakian had been in the public eye for a year. Soon after, their photographer Greg Watermann had posted a message on Myspace saying "I'm not supposed to say anything, but Scars will be playing again," hinting that Scars might be coming back soon.
Comeback & Second Album (2010–present)[edit source | editbeta]
On April 13, 2010, Scars on Broadway announced that they were performing a show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, on Sunday, May 2, 2010.[3]
On May 2, 2010, Scars on Broadway, this time the complete line-up (with Malakian on lead vocals and guitar), played a sold out show at The Troubadour in West Hollywood. The band performed all of the songs off their first album (except for Kill Each Other / Live Forever), as well as a new song dubbed by the bands setlist as "Talkin' Shit." They also played a cover song "Forever My Queen" by the band Pentagram. System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadjian accompanied and played 3rd guitar for "Cute Machines" and "They Say." Daron played an Ibanez Iceman.
On July 29, 2010, a new song titled "Fucking" was released onto the website http://www.armageddoncomealive.com/ to commemorate their upcoming show at The Avalon.
On August 20, 2010, Scars on Broadway, played a sold out show at the Avalon in Hollywood. The first 500 attendees received a vinyl edition of the song, "Fucking" and the first 20 out of that 500 received an autographed vinyl of the song, "Fucking." The band performed all of the songs off their first album (except for Kill Each Other / Live Forever), and performed "Hungry Ghost" (off of the Japanese edition of their album), "Fucking", "Talkin' Shit", and a cover song "Assimilate" by the band Skinny Puppy. Shavo Odadjian accompanied and played 3rd guitar for "Cute Machines" and "They Say." Daron played a Gibson Flying V.
On March 14, 2011 Greg Watermann (System Of A Down's photographer) released a music video for "Fucking". The footage was shot at Scars On Broadway's sold-out show at the Avalon on August 20, 2010.
On January 11, 2012 it was announced that they are currently recording their sophomore album and it is expected to be released sometime in the Summer.[citation needed]
On February 24, 2012 System of a Down announced that the Scars on Broadway website (http://scarsonbroadway.com/) is back online featuring a preview of a new song called "Guns Are Loaded". In August 2012 John Dolmayan announced he is no longer part of Scars on Broadway, and that a new Scars on Broadway album will be released in the next 3 to 4 months.[15]
In September 2012, it was revealed that an EP will also come out, sometime around the release of their second album. In the same month, Scars on Broadway performed at the Epicenter Festival in Irvine, Ca. This was the first show with new drummer Jules Pampena. Aside from the absence of original drummer John Dolmayan, backup vocalist and rhythm guitarist Franky Perez did not perform with the band. Perez confirmed on his Facebook that he is no longer in the band.[16]
There has been almost no communication from the band or its record label. Daron had previous plans for the new, and still, untitled album to be out early 2013 (according to live shows where they toured new, unreleased songs). He is doing all of the production and recording every instrument by himself in the studio. However, after one year since the relaunch of scarsonbroadway.com, which states the new album and EP are "coming soon", no new significant information regarding the CD being released has been given by the record label nor has there been an official state by the band on a new record. System of a Down - however - is continuing to perform together, which is the most likely cause for the delay.
Musical style[edit source | editbeta]
From its early days, Daron Malakian always addressed the project as just rock, and "a lot more rock driven, although there will be some metal influences in the System of a Down style". On what direction the debut album would take, Malakian states: "It will probably be something electronic mixed in with traditional Armenian and thrash, death, black, and doom metal influences. When the music comes out, it will still be structured, just like System of a Down's music is." In a later interview, Malakian stated that the music would be influenced by classic rock acts such as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Neil Young, and Roxy Music. He also stated that he shifted his songwriting from System of a Down's frazzled metal to more song-based work, inspired by Neil Young and David Bowie. "I don't feel we're the mosh-pit band," says Malakian. "That's just where I'm comfortable as a writer right now," he said, hinting at the band's rock over metal music approach.

Understanding Oil- Serj Tankian
Shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center in the 11th of September of 2001, Serj Tankian wrote and published an essay, which caused a lot of controversy because people got wrong the message, they tought Serj was trying to justify the attacks on 9/11, while it was just trying to analize this conflict on both sides. The essay was called "Understanding oil" and it was originially uploaded on the band's official webpage, but it was removed by Sony.

Understanding Oil

The brutal attacks/bombings this week in New York, and Washington D.C., along with threats of attacks there and elsewhere in the country have changed our times forever. While the mass media concentrates on the details of the destruction, and the blanketed words of politicians, I will attempt to understand and explain the events from the fence. BOMBING AND BEING BOMBED ARE THE SAME THINGS ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE FENCE.
Terror is not a spontaneous human action without credence. People just dont hijack planes and commit harikari (suicide) without any weight of thought to the action. No one in the media seems to ask WHY DID THESE PEOPLE DO THIS HORRIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE AND DESTRUCTION?
To be able to understand the answer to this, we must first look at our U.S. Mideast Policy. During most of the 20th century, U.S. businesses have worked on attaining oil rights and concessions from countries in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. After WWI, secret back door deals by our State Dept. yielded oil rights from then defeated Turkey to fields in what is now Iraq and Saudi Arabia, in return for looking the other way at a crime against humanity, the Genocide of the Armenians by the Turks. Oil profits have been the motivating factors behind many attempts at counterinsurgency of democratic regimes by the CIA and the U.S in the Middle East (such as Iran in the 1950s, where the Shah replaced the Prime Minister who refused to give up oil rights to the U.S., and since the people couldnt deal with the Shah, an extremist government headed by the Ayatollah Khomeini ultimately prevailed). During the Iran-Iraq war, America supplied both sides with weapons and advice. These are not the actions of a rich superpower wanting peace. Lets not forget that Saddam Hussein, before being Americas vision of the Anti-Christ, was a close ally of the U.S., and the CIA. So what was the firm belief system of consecutive American administrations that caused all this to occur ? PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WILL LEAD TO HIGHER OIL AND GASOLINE PRICES. Lets not also forget the power of the Arms industry, disguised as defense, that still sells billions of dollars of weapons to the area. Therefore it has not been in the short-term economic interest of the U.S. to foster Peace in the Middle East. Using the above reasoning, the U.S. has encouraged extremist governments, toppled democracies, as in the case of Iran to replace it with a monarchy, rigged elections, and many more unspeakable political crimes for U.S. businesses abroad. Lets not also forget the Red Scare. During the war between the then Soviet Union and Afghanistan, the U.S. armed and supported the Taliban, a fundamentalist Muslim organization, and allowed them to export opium and heroin out of their country to pay for those weapons. Therefore the Taliban rose to power and control with the help of the U.S.A. Today, the bombing of Iraq still continues, no longer covered by the media, the economic embargo still remains, killing millions of children, and recently, while the world and the U.N. General Assembly have cried out to bring in peacekeeping forces into Israel and Palestine, to end the escalated war and recent assassinations, the U.S. has vetoed the rest of the Security Council and has halted the possibility of peace, there, in the most volatile place in the world.
People in Serbia, Lebanon, Iraq, Sudan, and Afghanistan to name a few have seen bombs fall, not always at military targets and kill innocent civilians, as the scene in New York city yesterday. The wars waged by our government in our names has landed smack in the middle of our living room. The half hour of destruction closed down all world financial markets, struck the central headquarters of our military, and had our leaders running into bunkers, and our citizens into fear and frenzy. What scares me more than what has occurred is what our reactions to the occurrences may cause. President Bush belongs to a long generation of Republican Presidents who love war economies. The media has only concentrated on the bombings, if you will, and what type of retaliations are looming for the perpetrators. What everyone fails to realize is that the bombings are a reaction to existing injustices around the world, generally unseen to most Americans. To react to a reaction would be to further sponsor the reaction. In other words, my belief is that the terror will multiply if concrete steps are not taken to sponsor peace in the middle east, NOW. This does not mean that we should not find the guilty party(s), Bin Laden, or whoever they may be, and not try them. Put simply, as long as a major injustice remains, violence precipitates to the surface of life.
Native American folklore, the Bible, Nostradamus, and many other major religious beliefs point to this era with the visuals of yesterdays disasters, and conditions of ecological disasters we experience daily in our lives today. War, rumors of war, famine, long burning fires, etc., are at our doorstep. We can prevail over this possible vision with the power of the human spirit, understanding, compassion, and peace. ITS TIME TO PUT OUR NEEDS FOR SECURITY AND SURVIVAL, ACHIEVED ONLY THROUGH PEACE, ABOVE AND BEYOND PROFITS, ESPECIALLY IN THESE TIMES.
SOLUTION:
The U.S. should stop sidestepping the U.N. Security Council, and allow U.N. Peacekeeping troops and missions to the Middle East. Stop the violence first.
Stop the bombing and patrol of Iraq.
With todays gains in the use of alternative fuels, develop them to full usage with autos and other utilities, to make the country less dependant on an already depleting natural reserve, oil.
By initiating peace, we would have already shaken the foundations of support for Bin Laden, and/or all those that sponsor activities like those we saw yesterday, and break the stronghold of extremists on the world of Islam. On the other hand, if we carry out bombings on Afghanistan or elsewhere to appease public demand, and very likely kill innocent civilians along the way, wed be creating many more martyrs going to their deaths in retaliation against the retaliation. As shown from yesterdays events, you cannot stop a person whos ready to die.

As the century nears its formidable end, our global experience of universal proportions, predicted by many greats, will arrive at our solar system, to our system of a down.
Authoritarian oppression, family abuse, depression caused by conformity, and economic devastation will be neutralized by technological terrorism in times of complete chaos.
Control will never again be gained for toleration will become extinct. A husband quarrelling with his wife will not think twice or regret his spent bullet. Hungry children will not spare the grocer.
Remorse in all forms will be removed from human thoughts and actions.
Freedom will only be available through revolution or death. This system of a down is unavoidable as life on this planet becomes unnecessary.
The hand has five fingers, capable and powerful, with the ability to destroy as well as create.
We have the power to stop and reverse the tides of time by making our awareness of abuse known to the powers of industry and their uncouth political arms. Only by raising the awareness and promoting personal peace within today’s self-defeatist society, can we allow the planet a chance to avoid self-destruction!

This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song
This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song is from the album "Mesmerize". It may be about someone who ate the fish, and it seems that cocaine was being smuggled inside the fish An old way of marketing drugs was through fish, , so it says "Dont Eat the fish". The " stepson" thing may mean that stepsons, who arent blood related to the stepdad may not hold the same responsability or the same respect to the parent, so it may violate the rules, so Serj says " I hope your stepson don't eat the fish". Probably the There's something wrong with me There's something wrong with you, it's how you detect someone is a drug addict or he or she is not.
Lyrics:There's nothing wrong with me
There's something wrong with youThere's something wrong with me
I hope your stepson doesn't eat the fish
When we're crying for our next fix
There's nothing wrong with me
There's something wrong with you
There's something wrong with me
I hope your stepson doesn't eat the fish
When we're crying for our next fix
Killers never hurt feelings
Killers never hurt feelings
Killers never hurt feelings
Gonorrhea Gorgonzola
Gonorrhea Gorgonzola
Single files of clean feedings
I can't see your soul soul through your eyes
The crying walls of sliding architecture
Kidnapped by the likes of pure conjecture
Upholstery loving men all dwelling in the wells
Kidnapped by the likes of pure conjecture
Killers never hurt feelings
Killers never hurt feelings
Killers never hurt feelings
Gonorrhea gorgonzola
Gonorrhea gorgonzola
Single files of clean feedings
There's nothing wrong with me
There's something wrong with you
Wrong with you and I
When we're crying for our next fix
There's nothing wrong with me
There's something wrong with you

Hypnotize: Meanin' & Lyrics
Meaning of Hypnotize
This song recopilates a lot of hidden meanings, but mostly in the song we can recognize that it is talked about of how the governments manipulate people, and try to silence and end with the free expression "hypnotizing them into believing what they say. This keeps people from standing up to their governments."
So, going on with this meaning, we have an example used at the song:Tiennamen Square. When the students stood up to the government and protested, the government sent the army to kill these people.

Lyrics:
Why don't you ask the kids at Tiananmen square?
Was Fashion the reason why they were there?
They disguise it, Hypnotize it
Television made you buy it
I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my...
She's scared that I will take her away from there
Her dreams that her country left with no one there
Mezmerize the simple minded
Propaganda leaves us blinded
I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl
I'm just sitting in my car and waiting for my girl
